[L#0079] 1829 1C N6 NGC PF66BN BRONZED
Reddish medium brown and chocolate, the reddish tint a result of the bronzing experiment. (While the practice of bronzing planchets for larger mint medals was common during this period, it was rarely done for proof strikes of coins. The procedure involved covering the planchets with a thin layer of bronzing power prior to striking.) The fields are smooth and reflective, but the mirrors are not as deep as those seen on the normal (not bronzed) strikes. The reduced reflectivity is a result of the bronzing. Well struck except for the usual weakness on the upper stars. The reverse is rotated 30 degrees CCW, which is normal. The best identifying mark is a tiny planchet chip (as struck) near the dentils under the tip of the wreath ribbon. A choice, very attractive example of this extremely rare bronzed proof. EAC grade Proof-63. Comes with a long, distinguished provenance.
