Kwakiutl Dzoonokwa Mask
Circa 1970
Height 13 1/4 in. Width 9 in.

This carved and black painted cedar wood mask represents Dzoonokwa. "Sunken, hollow eyes under a heavy brow, bony face with strong, hooked nose and hollow cheeks, lips pushed forward - these are the marks of the Dzoonokwa, the fearsome giant, usually female, of Kwakiutl mythology. All Northwest Coast people have traditions of giant, often malevolent, human-like creatures who dwell in the dark wilderness and occasionally interact with humans. The Dzoonokwa is the archetypical monster-giant of the Northwest Coast." This mask is attributed to Lelooska (1933-1996).

Important no
