<td width="100%">
A pair of articulated puppets riding (an animal?) from the Kulango tribe. Might represent a male (front) and female (rear). Made of wood, hand-woven and hand-dyed cloth, cowrie shells, and what appears to be a patina of sacrificial libations. The cross-piece the puppets are "riding" can swivel somewhat up and down, but it is uncertain what function these sculptures performed in Kulango society. The Kulango are neighbors of the better documented Baule in the Cote d'Ivorie. Height of front rider: 11 inches, 27.5 cm. Overall dimensions of assemblage: 15 x 14 inches, 38 x 35.5 cm. From a renowned and published New York collection.
