The nearest approximation to information, commenting on the two figures in the Katherine White collection at the Seattle Art Museum, states: “It is likely that notions of luminosity and goodness … cluster about two standing figures attributed to the Kulango … but carved in an Akanizing manner. The Kulango … are prolific carvers. Kulango sometimes export statuary south to the Akan, hence the Baoule-like flavor to the smooth, segmented emphasis of calves and thighs” (Robert Farris Thompson. African Art in Motion . Icon and Art in the Collection of Katherine Coryton White. Los Angeles, Berkeley, London: University of California Press 1974, p.49). Thompson adds the following from the White archive: “Georges Rodrigues collected the pain in 1967 at Wenchi in the territory of the Brong” (loc.cit.). There is a small loss at the upper edge of the headdress; otherwise the condition is very good.

Provenance: A West Coast collector
A.
