German Jaeger Muzzleloading Rifle, by Johann Jacob Kuchenreuter, approx. .50 cal., 27-1/2'' barrel, bright blue finish, nicely carved walnut cheekpiece stock with walnut covered patch box, horn nose cap, and later leather sling. Mfg'd ca. 1850. Rifle features a lightly swamped silver and gold inlaid barrel, with silver band at breech, maker's name inlaid in silver, and gold maker's mark in three places rearward of the rear sight which shows remnants of gold plating as does the front sight. The Kuchenreuter family of gunmakers has been in business in various locations in Bavaria, Germany since the 1600's and is still in business in the town of Cham, Bavaria. Condition is fine for its age, with upper tang, front action lock and hammer showing approx. 90% original charcoal blue. Lockplate is inscribed with importer's name ''Thomas Smith / 55 Parliament St.'' Breechblock is fitted with a white metal gas relief plug. Brass stock furniture is highly figured and remains excellent. Stock shows normal handling marks and one crack near left side upper sling swivel. Action is tight, bore is bright. Est.: $2,500-$3,500.
