Decorative chest with simple fittings featuring an understated elegance

This chest was made in Korea in the 18th or 19th century. The rectangular wooden box rests on plain short runners and features a beautiful grain and rich patina. The edges are adorned with plain brass fittings. A lock and ornamental handle are attached to the front. Each side also shows a handle.

These so-called coin chests or ‘Ton-kwe’ were essential pieces of furniture for homes and shops in the Choson dynasty (1392–1897). Paper money did not exist and coins came in very small denominations, so had to be strung together to have any value. Consequently it was essential that these pieces were heavy and had strong locks for security.

The chest in in good condition with signs of wear consistent with age. One of the fittings on top is a little loose, a tiny piece (hardly noticeable) on the lock fitting is broken. The chest measures 43 x 99.5 x 49 cm (height x width x depth).
