<td width="100%">
A fine Korean bronze-wire inlaid hardwood carving. A museum deacquisition from the Toledo Art Museum in Toledo, Ohio, USA. This museum is renown for having one of the United States largest permanent collection of Oriental antiquities. The Toledo Art museum attributes this carving to the late 18th/early 19th c. Choson period. Though with all due respect, we feel that this piece could be late 18th/early 19th century Chinese. The carving depicts a male figure on top of a water buffalo. The male figure's hand is raised, original probably holding a whip which has been long missing. The water buffalo reacting to the impending crack of the whip. The piece stands 12-1/4" tall, by 14-3/4" long. The entire piece is masterfully carved out of a single block of blackish-red hardwood. An amazingly elaborate and very intricate pattern of hair-thin bronze is hammered into to upper skin of the wood. The artist's portrayal of the buffalo is very realistic as it appears to be surprised from the male figure earnest. The condition consensus is excellent condition, museum quality and without any injury or repair.
