<B>Kongo (Democratic Republic of Congo)</B></I><BR>Power Figure (<I>N'kisi</B></I>)<BR>Wood, glass, traces of pigment, nail<BR>Height: 11 1/2 inches Width: 4 inches Depth: 3 1/8 inches<BR><BR>This stylistically late example exhibits a standardized gesture of challenge and pending aggression, a hand on one hip and the other arm raised to strike a blow. Although there is a receptacle in the head, no magical substances were implanted, nor was the raised left hand ever bored to enable the insertion of a weapon. Both characteristics suggest that this figure never actually functioned as an empowered <I>n'kisi.</B></I> The raised proper left arm was broken off at the elbow and nailed back on. The base is cracked at the back and abraded on its edges. There is a minor loss on the lower chest.<BR><BR>Provenance: W. E. Fitzgerald, Chicago<BR>H.
