Konga (American International, 1961). Insert (14" X 36"). Tim Burton probably liked this tale of a monkey gone mad, since he has cast the film's lead, Michael Gough, in almost all of his films. Most famously, Gough stars as Alfred in the "Batman" films begun by Burton, drawing plaudits even opposite Val Kilmer and Chris O'Donnell. In this film, he plays a British botanist gone bananas after he discovers a serum that turns a chimpanzee into a vicious, gorilla-sized ape. When the scientist hypnotizes the ape to smite his enemies across London, mayhem swings across the city on the branches of chaos. In the end, though, Gough admits that when it comes to revenge, prank phone calls are just less of a headache than growing a giant vigilante monkey. For some reason, this story was developed under the title "I Was a Teenage Gorilla," a title later given to a Fox television pilot starring Shannen Doherty. This insert, once folded into quarters but now rolled, remains in excellent condition, with edges and corners still fairly sharp. The bright art of the monstrous ape looming over an anarchic London displays very well. Very Fine.
