This is an excellent authentic original Koken Barbers’ Supply Co. porcelain and leather barber chair dating to circa 1920-1930’s. The chair is a wonderful example of classic Koken barber chairs. Koken was the first chair to incorporate hydraulic lift along with its high-quality construction made them the number one choice of barber chair. These one of a kind Koken barber chairs are the most sought-after vintage barber chairs by collectors around the world. It would make a great addition to any collection. The chair is constructed out of stainless steel and porcelain with leather upholstery. The chair is marked "Koken Barber's Supply Co. - St. Louis U.S.A. - Koken". The piece is in good condition for its age, it does show some signs of repair on one of the steps. It measures 48" tall by approximately 42" long by 27" wide. These rare Koken chairs continually sell for a premium at auction such as the similar example that sold for $3,500 at RM Auctions 2008 sale, the chair that sold for $5,750 at J. Sugarman Auction Corp this April 2018, and the example that sold at Guernsey’s Auction in 2015 for $2,500. Ernest Koken invented the hydraulic-powered barber chair, thus it was aptly named after him. Mr. Koken was born in Germany but moved to the United States in his early years. As a young boy, he already had a knack for blueprints. It wasn’t surprising that he was able to develop a reclining barber chair while working for a barber chair manufacturing company. He eventually moved on to form his own business called, Koken Barbers Supply.
