Fabled college football coach (1888–1931). Rockne not only made Notre Dame the country’s leading football center, but also revolutionized football theory, stressing offense, organizing the precision backfield of Notre Dame shift, perfecting line play, and developing many stars, including the most famous backfield of all time, the “Four Horsemen of Notre Dame.” He died in a plane crash at the age of forty-three. TLS signed “Rock,” one page, 8 x 7.75, Notre Dame letterhead, December 22, 1921. Letter to Bob. In part: “I was certainly delighted to hear from you. I shall be here when your son reaches Notre Dame either as as coach or as a brother. I have been here so long that I don’t believe I will ever leave. We are going along nicely and though prospects are blue for next year we can stand one bad year I hope.” In very good condition, with several vertical creases and wrinkles, rough bottom edge, and intersecting mailing folds. Rockne had just finished a 10-1 season for the Irish, and despite his fears in this letter, Notre Dame would finish 8-1-1 in 1922. Rockne would also get his wish to stay at Notre Dame, but tragically cut short in 1931.
