Yoruba (Nigeria)
Kneeling Woman holding bowl, with a Child on her back
Wood, white and indigo pigments
Height: 15 ¼ inches Width: 6 ¼ inches Depth: 8 ¾ inches

A monoxyl carving of a kneeling woman, on an integral base, holding a bowl with both hands in front of her, and with her child, whose head is turned to the left, positioned on its mother's back, resting on her hips, as it would be tied on to give the mother freedom of movement. There is an overall red cast from the carving having been rubbed with camwood pigment, apart from the mother's and the child's hairstyles and the patterned front of the bowl, which are dyed with blue indigo, and the woman's ringed neck and carved wristlets, which have white pigmentation. Scarification marks are shown on the woman's face and her arms. The bowl probably served in the cult of divination to contain palm nuts, or otherwise as a container of kola nuts which were commonly shared out in hospitality ceremonies.

Provenance: Thomas D.
