Fantastic original felt tip sketch of Stuart Sutcliffe by Klaus Voormann on a light blue 11.75 x 8.25 sheet, no date but circa spring 1962, showing the recently passed Beatles bass player standing on a cloud and surrounded by a group of small angels. Reverse side features a handwritten letter from Astrid Kirchherr, addressed to Sutcliffe’s younger sister Pauline, in full: “Just a little drawing of your beautiful brother heaven I hope it makes you happy I hope! All the little angels are Stuart’s fans the[y] have a Stuart–fan–club. The angels say Stuart is much better than Elvis and he looks much more beautiful. I think so too. I think god-father Mark never seen anythin[g] like that before ‘rock and roll in heaven’ but I think he like it now too. He is the boss of the fan club. And he arrange that all Stuart’s little angel fans can come for tea to Stuart that is very difficult because he is a big, big star of everythin[g] in heaven. I think good old god wants to buy a new guitar for darling angel to his birthday. I will give millions of pounds for one set in his next rock show. You too? Love from your big sister, xxx.” In fine condition, with intersecting folds. Klaus Voormann and Astrid Kirchherr were principal photographers of the Beatles during their early days in Hamburg. The pair were introduced to the group at the Kaiserkeller bar in August 1960, and soon after Kirchherr became romantically involved with Sutcliffe. The two were engaged in November and, less than a year later, Sutcliffe left the band to focus on his artwork. While living with the Kirchherr family in Hamburg, Sutcliffe suffered from severe headaches and, after dismissing a medical trip to Britain as unnecessary, he succumbed to a ruptured aneurysm on April 10, 1962.
