Klaus Fußmann (born 1938), Ink Drawing ‘Gelting’, 1979
This ink drawing by the German painter and illustrator Klaus Fußmann shows a landscape in Gelting, a municipality in Schleswig-Holstein on the Baltic Sea, where the artist lives and works today. As a major exponent of the ‘Neue Gegenständlichkeit’ [new representational style], Fußmann is one of the most important contemporary German landscape painters. In dialogue with nature, the artist creates atmospheric pictorial worlds such as this. Painted on a light background contrasting black lines and grey planes – applied with fast, gestural brush strokes – is given form to a landscape with telephone poles. Here, figurativeness and abstraction merge, creating a particular picturesque aesthetic, reminiscent of Asian ink drawings.

The drawing by Klaus Fußmann is in good condition with only minor signs of age and use. On the back of the frame there is a label from the Baukunst Gallery in Cologne with information on the painting. The frame shows light colour and material loss. Framed the work measures 54.5 x 65.5 cm. The sheet measures 29.5 x 41 cm. The work is titled, dated and signed lower left ‘Gelting 1.9.79 / Fußmann’. Verso, the sheet is inscribed in red pen with ‘1.9.79’.
