A view of the countryside and farmhouse from the Southern Pacific's "Shasta Route." The photograph measures 9 x 7 1/2", mounted on biege cardstock with an ornate blue border measuring 11 x 9". The contrast is medium while the focus is good. Stains and foxing are present on the image and the cardstock, particularly near the top and left edges. The bottom right corner remains attached but has a 1 1/2" tear running across it. Worn areas are visible on both top corners. No photographer is listed. On the reverse, both the Klamath Hot Springs and the Southern Pacific Company are advertised. Of the Hot Springs, they are "located on the Klamath River, at the mouth of Shovel creek, twenty miles from Ager on the Cal. and Oregon R.R. . . The proprietor will spare no expense to make it pleasant for the guests." The "Shasta Route" of the Southern pacific Company runs between "San Francisco and Portland, passing through the beautiful valleys of Sacramento, Willamette, Umpqua, and Rogue River. " It also notes that "for further particulars, call on or address Edson Brothers, Klamath Hot Springs, Siskiyou County, California." In 1887, the Edson Brothers bought the Klamath Springs Hotel with tall cliffs, oak trees, and the white water of the Klamath visible from its porch. Water from the Hot Springs was supposedly very beneficial for those with a variety of ailments. Fire destroyed the Klamath Hot Springs Hotel in 1915, which was traumatic to the owners, eventually resulting in the sale of the property (Ref: copcolakestore.com).
