This is an early shot of the railroad station at Kirkland on the Ash Fork & Phoenix Railroad. Cabinet card photograph measures 7”x 4 1/2”, beige single matte 8”x5”, medium contrast—some yellowing, and the focus is good. There is some very small foxing and a minor crease on the right side of the photo. No photographer identified. Located on the western part of Yavapai County and south west of Prescott, Kirkland was named for William H. Kirkland who came to the state in 1856. A Post Office Box was established in 1871. The town was a stage stop and later a small railroad station. The Kirkland Station was on the Ash-Fork & Phoenix Railroad which reached Ash Fork in 1883 and Phoenix by 1895. The railroad was a lone on the Atlantic & Pacific Railroad. Period writing on the back "Kirkland Station Ariz., for Mother."
