TLS signed “Kirk,” one page, 7 x 10.25, personal letterhead, June 2, 1981. Letter to Oscar-winning director Joseph L. Mankiewicz, in part: "I have just come back from Australia where I finished a film. I'm sorry that I was not here on May 20. I would liked to have been present to watch you get a well-deserved honor. You are one of the directors for whom I have worked, in more years than I want to mention, who is very high on my list of favorites." In fine condition, with staple holes to the upper left corner. Accompanied by a letter from Douglas's assistant to George Wallach of the Directors Guild of America, declining an invitation to be present at a ceremony for Mankiewicz. In 1981, Mankiewicz was honored by the Directors Guild of America with the Honorary Life Member Award. He directed Douglas in A Letter to Three Wives (1949), for which he won the Academy Awards for Best Director and Best Screenplay, and There Was a Crooked Man (1970).
