<B>Kiowa Painted Hide War Shield</B></I><BR>Circa 1850<BR>Diameter 18 in.<BR><BR>This shield is composed of a native tanned hide cover and a buffalo rawhide base with the buffalo hair attached. The soft tanned cover is painted with a central sun symbol in red, green, and blue, an elongated crescent moon above, flanked by six red spheres, and a dragonfly at the bottom, center. A pair of tanned hide "ears" painted red and blue orient the shield. A brass hawk bell is fastened to the outer cover and traces of other attachments remain. The cover is gathered and laced in, on the reverse, in typical Plains fashion.<BR><BR>Provenance<BR>Collected by Father William Thomson of the Benedictine Monastery in Canon City, Colorado.<BR><BR> <BR><BR><B>Important notice:<
