<B>Kiowa Model Shield</B></I><BR>Circa 1890<BR>Diameter 14 in.<BR><BR>The model shield is made with a rawhide base and a native tanned hide cover. The shield cover is painted with a highly stylized bear paw outlined in red paint. A cow tail and two bead wrapped fringes with tin cones and dyed red horsehair are tied to the shield. On the reverse, the tanned cover is fitted and laced over the rawhide base in typical Plains fashion. Portions of the rawhide base have been rubbed with white and green paint.
