Kiowa Bow Case and Quiver
Kiowa Warrior's Bow Case and Quiver
Circa 1870
Length 54 in.

This classic set is fashioned from native tanned buffalo hide. There is minimal beading at the top of both bow case and quiver. Traces of red and yellow ochre paint remain. A plain wood bow (missing the bowstring) and three iron tipped arrows complete the set. A strike-a-light case is tied to the quiver. It is beaded on saddle leather with a central stepped diamond in red and blue, outlined in white, against a navy blue background. Tin cones further decorate the case and the fringe is wrapped with bands of German silver. A brass concho is fastened to the cover flap. The strike-a-light case holds a firesteel and a carved bone vent pick used to clean a percussion rifle. An awl case, also beaded on saddle leather, is decorated with diagonal stripes in white against a navy blue background and suspended from the set.

Provenance
Tom Haas, Riverton, Utah

Reference
Identical to the set illustrated on page 179 in Steve Alley and Jim Hamm, Encyclopedia of Native American Bows, Arrows, and Quivers, Volume 2, Plains and Southwest. Goldthwaite, Texas: Bois d'Arc Press, 2002.

Important noti
