Kingdom of Macedon. Alexander III, the Great, 336-323 B
Kingdom of Macedon. Alexander III, the Great, 336-323 BC. Gold Stater (8.49 g) minted at Abydos under Philip III, c. 318/7 BC. Head right of Athena wearing triple-crested helmet decorated with snake. Reverse: Nike standing left, holding wreath and stylis; to left, monogram, star and cornucopiae. Price 1524v; M. 381v. Struck in high relief; lustrous and Superb Extremely Fine. .

The triple cresting on the side of Athena's helmet is very separate and distinct from the main top crest on this obverse die. It could be a mint signature from Abydos, using her symbol, the griffin. When held a certain way, the extra decoration looks very much like the head right of a griffin with mouth open .
Estimated Value $3,000 - 4,000.
