Kingdom gold 100 Lei 1922, Fr-9, Brilliant Uncirculated, small marks but booming luster and an excellent example of this rare piece. Romanesque bust facing left of Ferdinand I (1914-1927) with the royal crest on reverse. A medallic issue made for his coronation, and very stately indeed. Friedberg value is $2000 but gold has risen considerably since publication in 2003, and we believe this finely preserved memento to be worth more. Historic note: On October 15, 1922, the coronation of King Ferdinand and Queen Marie took place at the Cathedral in Alba Iulia, when they took the titles "Sovereigns of Greater Romania." The following year, the king announced a new constitution which granted his subjects universal and equal right to vote. This short but glorious reign ended suddenly on July 20, 1927, with the king's passing. He ruled just 13 years and was ahead of his time, in this part of Europe, as a democratic leader.
