King of Great Britain and Ireland (1765–1837) who served from 1830 to 1837 who earned the sobriquet ‘Sailor King’ for his youthful service in the Royal Navy. His reign, though short, was marked by much social progress, including laws restricting child labor, the abolition of slavery throughout the British Empire, and the reformation of the British electoral system. Leaving no direct heir upon his death in 1837, he was succeeded by his niece, Victoria, who reigned for the remainder of the century. ALS signed “William R,” one page both sides, 7.25 x 9, January 21, 1829. Letter in his difficult to decipher hand to an unidentified gentleman. In part: “I answer to yours of yesterday…I have written to Lord…to request His Lordship to ask the King to confer the Honour of Knithood [sic] which I assumed His Lordship must have submitted to the King.” There are also references to Lord William Bentinck, who was the Governor-General of India at the time, and Lord Melville, who was then Lord of the Admiralty. In fine condition, with intersecting mailing folds.
