King Philip II of Spain Document Signed "Yo El Rey." One page, 8.25" x 11", np, September 22nd, 1557. This document was written in the year 1557, the second year of his reign. He was the first person to officially use the title, King of Spain. Philip's reign was dotted with spots of success and failure; among the successes were the acquisition of Portugal and expansion of the Spanish empire in the America's and Africa. This letter, in part, deals with one city in Africa called Oran. Oran is a city in Northwestern Algeria; the Spanish captured it in 1509 under Cardinal Cisneros. They held control over the city and province till 1708 when the Ottomans seized it. This document discusses a message he received on the 30th of August and states that he sent a messenger right away to the Cardinal of Alexandria about the success they were having in Oran with the Turks and Moors. The general tone of the letter is one of concern and dutifulness. He requests that the receiver remain vigilant and continue to do his service for the security and sanctity of the empire. A very legalized document with some archaic language; but the content is interesting as it deals with Spanish colonies and the legal nature in which these were handled.
The document is in fine condition; usual folds are present; soiling present on fold lines; small area of foxing on the right edge near the center.

Important notic
