Ineffectual king of France from 1715 to 1774 who was dominated by his strong-willed and unscrupulous mistress, Madame de Pompadour. Advised of the growing discontent among his people, Louis prophetically observed ‘Après moi le déluge’—After me the flood—an apt prediction of the impending French Revolution. Manuscript vellum DS, in French, signed “Louis,” one page, 19 x 11.75, 1724. Boldly penned untranslated document, signed at the conclusion by the king. Intersecting folds, scattered light toning, soiling, and staining, expected creases and wrinkles, and a small hole to top left, otherwise very good condition. The seal is missing.
