King Louis XV of France 1741 Document Signed At t
King Louis XV of France 1741 Document Signed At the death of his great-grandfather Louis XIV in 1715, a five year-old Louis succeeded to the throne with Philippe II as regent. After the regent died in 1723, the king was guided by Andre Hercule de Fleury. When Fleury died in 1743, the king decided not to appoint a chief minister. King Louis XV lacked both the will and interest to govern forcefully, and his reign was influenced by a succession of favorites including Mme de Pompadour from the 1730s until 1764. Throughout Louis' reign, the upper classes gained more power and wealth. The country knew general prosperity, but the government was near bankruptcy. The apathy of Louis XV about these mounting problems led to an expression "Apres moi le deluge" (After me, the flood). His ineffectual rule contributed to the decline of royal authority that led to the outbreak of the Revolution in 1789, during the reign of his grandson, Louis XVI. Here is a manuscript document, approximately 9.5" x 13" in size, dated February 28, 1741 from Versailles and signed, "Louis." It declares that a certain prisoner be transferred from Chalons to the Royal Island to stay there for the rest of his life. Overall condition is fine and bright, with one fold and some roughness at the right edge, minor foxing. Accompanied by COA from PSA/DNA.
