King of France (born 1638) from 1643 until his death in 1715, known as the 'Sun King' for the glittering splendor of his court at Versailles and the unparalleled glory of France during his 72-year reign. ADS in French, signed “Louis,” one page both sides, 9.75 x 14.75, October 19, 1692. King Louis pens a lengthy endorsement of seventeen lines at the conclusion of a financial document, beginning halfway down the front of the page and continuing for the entirety of the reverse. The document lists the kingdom's revenues and expenses related to the Royal Mail, and the king comments on the accounts. In fine condition, with slight splitting along the horizontal fold. The king was required to acknowledge the revenues from the post officially in his own handwriting, rather than a secretary's; autograph texts from King Louis XIV are otherwise very rare. A highly desirable and important piece of postal history.
