King Henri III of France and Poland Letter Signed "Henri." One page, 7.75" x 11", np, January 20, 1584. This is a letter of congratulations written to a Cardinal Lancellotto. Henri III was the fourth son of King Henri II of France and Catherine de Medici. Henri's reign as king would be marred by constant turmoil over religion; so much so that because of several edicts and religious conflicts Henri was assassinated by a fanatical young Dominican friar named Jacques Clement. The friar gained access to the king by presenting false papers and once in the King's presence he presented him with a bundle of papers and documents stating that he also had a secret message for the king. The king, as was procedure, motioned for his guards to step back and give them privacy; as the friar leaned forward he stabbed Henri in the abdomen. The king would die the following day, childless, and the last of the Valois royal line. Henri of Navarre succeeded him as Henri IV, and the new line of Bourbon kings was begun.

The letter is in very fine condition; usual folds are present, slight soiling along the fold lines. The letter is mounted alongside an engraving of Henri. The entire piece makes an impressive display.
