King of Sweden (born 1746) who reigned from 1771 until his assassination at a masquerade ball in 1792. He was the eldest son of King Adolf Frederick of Sweden and Queen Louise Ulrika, and a first cousin of Empress Catherine the Great of Russia. He legalized Catholic and Jewish presence in Sweden and enacted wide-ranging reforms aimed at economic liberalism. Manuscript DS in Swedish, signed “Gustaf,” one page both sides, 9 x 14.75, September 28, 1781. Untranslated document signed at the conclusion in ink by King Gustav III. In very good to fine condition, with intersecting folds, fraying to bottom edge, dampstaining to left edge and upper left corner, light soiling, and show-through from writing to opposing sides. Accompanied by three engraved portraits of Gustav III, and one of his assassin, Jacob Johan Anckarström.
