King George IV: Translations from Terence Bound Autograph Manuscript Signed "George P". From the estate of the Duke & Duchess of Windsor. Consists of 70 pages handwritten by the 15-year-old future King of England. He has noted beneath his signature (on a front free endpaper) the following: "Volume 4th. begun Oct. 31st,1777, finished May 23rd, 1778". In a very neat and attractive script, the then-Prince of Wales writes English translations from the original Latin (assumedly) of the following works of the Roman playwright Publius Terentius Afer (better known as Terence): The Andria (Act 1 Scene 1); The Aldelphi (Act 1 Scenes 1,2,3); and The Heautontimorumenos (Act 1 Scene 1). One might speculate that this was a school assignment, as it is well known that he was a good student and proficient in several languages.

This book is handsomely bound in 19th century black morocco with gilt titles on a compartmented spine, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers, 8vo (6.25" x 8"), with a bookplate of a previous owner (Geo.W. Stevens) on the front pastedown. Included with it is a tantalizing fragment of an unidentified Typed Letter Signed dated December 17th, 190_. Most of the text has been lost but the following portion has been mounted to silk: "I send you herewith, …es, a manuscript volume in the w… Fourth, it being one of his tasks …ture is on one of the first pages …to be lamented that his general … good as his handwriting. With best regards, I am…" The signature is mostly gone. This item was Lot 401 at "The Duke and Duchess of Windsor" sale at Sotheby's, September 11-19, 1997 and still has the lot tag.

Shipping: Books & Catalogs (view shipping information)
