Emperor of Austria and King of Bohemia, Croatia and Hungary (born 1830) from 1848 until his death on November 21, 1916. LS in German, three pages on two adjoining sheets, 8.5 x 11.25, October 11, 1875. Letter to an unnamed "Royal Highness," in part (translated): "Regarding the desire of the Mother Superior of the Angelic Damsels in Mainz, to find a new field of activity in Austria for the nuns of the affiliated convents which have been dissolved in the Grand Duchy of Hesse, i.e., to found dayschools for girls with these nuns in the Monarchy, I am convinced that they would have a positive effect on the instruction and education of feminine youth, just as do the already existing convents; nonetheless, under the present circumstances it is to be feared that the introduction of these communities would have great difficulty in attaining the conditions for effective activity in securing their means of livelihood, which the most powerful protection would not entirely be able to remove. If the Mother Superior wishes to make the attempt in spite of this, these Angelic Damsels would first have to give proof of the necessary means of subsistence and of their legally recognized ability to teach; the school organization plan would have to be shown and the towns named where they wish to found such schools, and finally, they would have to become Austrian citizens." In fine condition.
