Nephew of Marie Antoinette (born 1777) who was King of the Two Sicilies from 1825 until his death in 1830. LS in French, signed “Francois,” four pages on two adjoining sheets, 7.25 x 8.75, September 22, 1830. Letter to King Louis Philippe upon his succession to the French throne. In part (translated): “The news of the sad events in Paris produce in me great alarm knowing the dangers which menace the unfortunate Charles X and his family…I have not been insensible to the reasons which have determined you to cease the progress of anarchy in accepting the Crown which has been offered you.” Intersecting folds with a few small edge separations, scattered creases, and a bit of show-through from writing to opposing sides, otherwise fine condition. European leaders were plagued by revolution throughout this period, and King Charles X of France had been forced to abdicate after the July Revolution of 1830. His cousin, Louis Philippe, succeeded to the throne and was popular at first, but he too was forced to abdicate in 1848.
