LS signed “Albert Edward,” one page, 8 x 12.5, Marlborough House letterhead, December 29, 1877. Letter to H. Phillipson of Tynemouth, requesting a painting by Louise Jopling for the Exposition Universelle. In part: "With reference to the representation of British Art at the Universal Exhibition to be held at Paris next year, I beg to inform you that Mrs. Jopling has conveyed to me her special wish to be represented upon that occasion, by her picture of 'The Modern Cinderella,' which I am given to understand, is in your possession. As Executive President of the Royal Commission, I have much pleasure in inviting you to assist in promoting the success of the British School of Fine Arts in Paris, by consenting to deprive yourself of this representative work for a time, and to entrust it to my care for exhibition in the Galleries of the British Section at Paris." Signed at the conclusion by the future King Edward VII as president of the Royal Commission for the Paris Universal Exhibition of 1878. In very good to fine condition, with light creasing to the bottom, and light fading to the text. Jopling was one of the most prominent female artists of the Victorian era, and 'The Modern Cinderella' was indeed displayed at the Paris Exposition of 1878.
