World War I–dated ALS signed “Edward,” one page, 5 x 8, Headquarters, British Army letterhead, January 29, 1915. In part: “Just a hurried scrawl to ask you to send out another £200…I am in no financial straits but merely have to pay over £80 as the expenses of my French trip!! 2 English officers, 1 French officer and self; 2 servants, my chauffeur and five French chauffeurs; a large retinue but it was not my doing I can assure you!!…Splendid naval victory on Sunday but pretty futile Zeppelin raid. Please forgive this scrawl but hope you’ll send £200 as soon as possible.” Intersecting folds (a few vertical folds passing through the signature), and moderate scattered creases and soiling, otherwise fine condition. Edward begged the King to allow him to get closer to the action on the front lines and he was eventually assigned to Lord Cavan’s staff, though still kept a careful distance from true combat.
