British monarch (1630–1685) who ushered in the Restoration of 1660 and ruled until his death. Uncommon manuscript DS, signed “Charles R,” one page, 8 x 11.75, January 15, 1670. King Charles orders a payment to James, Duke of Monmouth, of “one Thousand six hundred Twenty five Pounds, seaventeene shillings and foure Pence, the same being due to Our owne Troope of Guards Commanded by the said Duke of Monmouth upon the muster of the 20th of November 1669.” Signed at the top by King Charles II and on the reverse by Monmouth. In fine condition, with professional repairs and cleaning. The eldest illegitimate son of Charles II, Monmouth famously led the unsuccessful 1685 revolt against his uncle, King James II, by which he attempted to claim the throne for himself; his failure resulted in his beheading shortly thereafter. Items signed by both Charles II and Monmouth are exceptionally rare.
