Cuban boxer (1910–1988) who enjoyed success both in the ring and in society life during the 1930s; he became Cuba's first world boxing champion when he knocked out defending world Junior Lightweight champion Benny Bass. Rare ALS in Spanish, signed “Eligio Sardinas, Kid Chocolate,” one page, 6.25 x 8, May 20, 1978. Handwritten letter to Tex Gordon, in part: (translated): “I will be very glad that upon receiving this you find yourself enjoying perfect health. I'm fine, thank you Tex, I received your letter and I hadn't answered because I was very busy but I can and I answer your letter which satisfied me with your words that were so kind to me. You tell me that you are a friend of Jack Kid Berg, well, you are my good friend and a few years ago we spent a lot of time in Havana. Well, Tex, I'm very glad you wrote to me. That's a sign that I have many friends who remember me, just like you. I'd like you to send me newspapers. Well my friend Tex I am glad that when you receive you are enjoying perfect greetings in the company of your family and friends.” In fine condition, with scattered small stains in the signature area. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope hand-addressed by Sardinas, who incorporates his signatures into the return address field on the reverse flap, “Eligio Sardinas, Kid Chocolate.”
