Two stock certificates issued in 1903 and 1904, both signed by Key Pittman. Set of 2: 1) Rescue Mining Company of Tonopah, issued in 1903 to A.S. Roberts for 500 sh. At $1 each. Signed by Key Pittman as secretary and W.J. Harris as president. Seven mining vignettes, uncancelled. 2) Tonopah Gold Mountain Mining Co., issued at Tonopah in 1904 to Raymond D. Frisbie for 1,000 shares at $1 each. Signed by Key Pittman as Vice President and C. Runge as secretary. Small hole cancels thru signatures. Key Pittman (1872-1940) joined the gold rush at the Klondike in 1897 and moved to Tonopah in 1902 to practice law as a mining attorney. He soon became identified with some of the largest mining companies in the state. Some of the most important being the Tonopah Extension, Bullfrog Mining Company, United Greenwater Copper and the famous Montgomery Shoshone. He was also attorney for the Schwab interests, State Bank and Trust Company and the Southern Nevada Telephone and Telegraph Co. (Beatty, 1907). Pittman won election to the U.S. Senate from Nevada by 89 votes in 1913 to fill the seat vacated by George S. Nixon. Pittman served in the senate until his death in 1940. He was known as “The Senator from Tonopah” due to his vigorous support of the silver industry. Nice signatures from one of the giants of the Nevada mining industry. VF.
