<Our item number 109997>Kerouac Jack. (1922-69) American author; leading chronicler of the beat generation. Typed Letter Signed "Jack" with a postscript initialed "JK", 1¼ pp (recto/verso), 11" x 8½" (St. Petersburg, Florida), 27 Sept. 1968. Excellent condition with incredible content. Written the year before his death to Sterling Lord, his literary agent. Jack regularly made two originals of his correspondence; since this letter has no folds, it probably was one which Kerouac retained. The letter was obtained from Keouac's estate in 1991and is accompanied by a certificate signed by John Sampas, Jack's brother-in-law, and executor of Jack and Stella Kerouac's estate.

In part: "Here's what I'll do with SPOTLIGHT. I'll use my public appearances on TV and lectures as rungs in the ladder of the narrative….I can throw in more private matters, such as my two physical beatings in bars….I'll st art with when I'm living on that backporch in Florida with my Maw in 1957, broke…no money for meat…suddenly Time Magazine comes in to interview me about the upcoming publication of ON THE ROAD….When I arrive in New York City…they tell me I'm an overnight success…I begin to realize that 'success' is when you cant enjoy your food any more in peace…."

He describes television appearances, a lecture at Brandeis University where he was booed for arguing about peace, the premiere of his movie PULL MY DAISEY at the San Francisco film festival, moving around the country, getting two beatings, a trip to Montreal, Canada for a French language program, and then an appearance on William F. Buckley Jr.'s program "where Buckley kept kicking my shoes and telling me to shush so the other guests could demonstrate how dull they were or stupid….of course I wont go into 1960 BIG SUR experiences or 1965 SATORI IN PARIS but just mention them in passing. It will compl ete the 'Legend' up to now and may very well be my most exhausting writing experience, since the story is so fraught with eminent peril, men, women, dogs, cats, cornpones, agents, publishers, poolsharks, TV directors calling me a 'drunken moron,' celebrities, boozers, bookies, phew, wait till you see it. But I cant do it without some money to live on, so show this letter to the prospective publisher and let's get at it."

A postscript has interesting content on why he wants to use the title SPOTLIGHT and he also makes an uncomplimentary remark about his wife, Stella, "…I think she oughta mind her own business and wash her dishes…."
Estimated Value $4,000-6,000.

Our item number 109997
<IMAGES>

</IMAGES>
