Kentucky Rifle.
Description Circa 1820 to 1830. OL: 60". BL: 43". TB: Octagonal. LM: Flintlock. Obvious re-conversion and replaced. PB: 4-piece. S: Curly Maple. SR: Lengthened, three patches, and wrist repair. Incise and relief carving. This Kentucky rifle, although unsigned, may be a very late J. Bonewitz or more likely by someone who was influenced by his work in the Womelsdorf region. There is relief carving behind the barrel tang and behind the cheekpiece, as well as lock and sideplate carved paneling. The brass sideplate and re-converted lock are replacements and the barrel has been lengthened approximately ten inches at the breech end. There is a patch behind the tang carving as well as a half-inch by 12 - 1/2-inch piece in front of the lock. The curly maple stock has been replaced 31 inches from the rear ferrule forward to the muzzle end. The brass patchbox follows the basic form of John Bonewitz's Golden Age work and the simple engraving basically follows or outlines its silhouette. Condition (Fair).
