Kentucky Rifle with lock stamped “Leman Lancaster, PA” showing Western PA styling, approx 1850, brass mounted engraved German silver inlays, side plate, period inscribed “J. Jones”, possibly the original owner. The rifle measures 48-1/2” overall, with a 34” medium weight barrel which has been shortened 6” to 9” in our opinion, and the stock set back to slightly longer than 1/2 stock with a newer brass forend cap. The rifle shows a plain pierced patchbox affixed by three screws and pins and there are 18 lightly engraved German silver inlays with one replaced brass inlay which is plain and of a later date. The most interesting inlay is behind the sideplate and looks like a tree intertwined with a half-moon with hanging fruit. The rifle shows movement of the sight down the barrel. The stock shows a nice striped grain which is natural. The stock shows an old replacement of wood, approx. 4-3/8” in front of the lock, approx 1”. Some cracks, small repairs around the tang. A stress crack down the right side of the stock from sideplate to the rear thimble that is minor. Otherwise the stock is sound. The metal surfaces show a deep brown patina with light to moderate pitting and erosion and a couple areas of slightly heavier pitting. The ramrod shows a break at the end, the lock is working, the brass mounts and patchbox show a good patina. An attractive rifle made West of Philadelphia. Est: $750 - $1,500
