First baseball commissioner (1866–1944). Landis was elected to office on November 12, 1920, and helped restore public confidence in baseball following the Black Sox scandal of 1919. The former US district judge banned eight White Sox players for life, despite their acquittal in a court of law. Landis subsequently issued other edicts utilizing the ‘absolute power’ granted him by the owners to ensure the game’s integrity. Vintage glossy 6.25 x 9.5 photo of Landis raising his fist in the air as he takes in a baseball game, signed and inscribed in fountain pen. In very good condition, with scattered creases and surface marks, with horizontal creasing to facial area, a single tack hole to each corner tip, and some light edge curling. An excellent image of the commissioner in his element at the ball park.
