Kenanville Confederate cavalry saber with period scabbard, 39-1/2” overall with 33-1/2” blade showing unstopped fuller, roman numerals XVIII on left edge of guard, showing a deep uncleaned patina and its original leather over wood grip. The blade is in good condition showing light to slightly heavy scattered erosion and surface pitting, no cleaning, slight rounding of tip, and some minor battle marks at edge. The hilt shows a deep untouched original patina, the leather over wood grip shows losses at the edge, shrinkage and loss and no wire. The grip is good but shrinking away from the ends of the wood. The pommel nut is unmolested, the guard is slightly loose on the blade. The blade retains an original to the period brass mounted scabbard with two rings and shows correct style drag and is probably the sword’s original. The scabbard shows a dark patina, some scratches, normal aging, and opening and small loss about the size of a pen head at the top. The hangars show a medium patina, slightly lighter than the hilt and were probably cleaned once 50 or more years ago, now aging back nicely. An original sword similar to one illustrated page 27, William A. Albaugh’s Confederate Age Weapons.
