According to Ken Carlson, “The cougar, also known by other common names of puma and mountain lion, is reclusive and elusive by nature making it difficult to observe in the wild. It has remarkable adaptability to a wide range of habitats with preferences of rocky canyon lands, escarpments, rim rocks and dense brush in rugged terrain. The most recognizable feature of the cougar is its long, heavy cylindrical tail measuring one third of the total length. The mountain lion was named Ha k-ti ta sh-a-na, “Long Tail” by the Zuni people who considered it the master of their prey gods.”
