Kellogg & Humbert Gold Ingot
Kellogg & Humbert Gold Ingot. 17.36 ounces. When the S.S. Central America sank in the Atlantic Ocean on September 12, 1857, it was estimated that 425 passengers drowned that night and 153 were eventually rescued. The captain, William Lewis Herndon, went down with the ship. As related in America's Lost Treasure, Herndon's brother-in-law, Lieutenant Matthew Fontine Maury, paid a moving tribute to Captain Herndon: "Forgetful of self, mindful of others, his life was beautiful to the last and in his death he added a new glory to the annals of the sea." Maury is considered the father of the science of oceanography.
Along with the 425 passengers that perished that night, all the vast holdings of gold that were being transported to New York also slipped beneath the waves. One news account at the time had the sub-headline "About Two Millions of Treasure Lost!" The size of this ingot is only suggestive of the financial turmoil the loss of so much bullion created in the markets on the East Coast. This is one of the smaller Kellogg & Humbert ingots from this fabled treasure ship. The top side reads: No 412 / 17.36 Oz / 951 FINE / $341.27. The imprint of the company logo in located on the long right side with most of the word ASSAYERS off the bar. The individual ingot number is repeated at the top of the back side. As always, assay chips are out of opposing corners. The surfaces show just the slightest bits of reddish patina, the majority of which is located at the bottom of the top side. 41 x 53 x 15 mm.
From The Arroyo Grande Collection.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
