Kellogg & Humbert Gold Ingot. No. 341. This moderate-si
Kellogg & Humbert Gold Ingot. No. 341. This moderate-sized rectangular ingot has almost all the imprints on the top face. It reads: No 341 / KELLOGG & HUMBERT ASSAYERS (imprint) / 54.08 OZ / 948 FINE / $1059.80. An assayer's cut has been taken from the lower right corner and another from the top right corner of the back side. The back side repeats the individual ingot number 341 at the top.
The firm of Kellogg & Humbert needs little introduction. Mostly known for its $20 and $50 gold pieces, the firm filled a void in the monetary needs of northern California when the newly established San Francisco mint could not keep pace with demand for gold coins. The Alta California of May 1, 1855 reported that the Kellogg firm provided more than 50% of the coinage needs of the local economy. When the S.S. Central America sank on September 12, 1857, more ingots from Kellogg were on board than any other private assayer. This particular ingot represents considerable value in 1857 dollars, and the surfaces are remarkably smooth with very few imperfections from the production process. An exceptionally pleasing ingot and the perfect complement to a collection of coins from this highly respected firm.
From The Groth Family Collection.
