Kellogg & Humbert Gold Ingot. 92.74 ounces. Both John K
Kellogg & Humbert Gold Ingot. 92.74 ounces. Both John Kellogg and Augustus Humbert were active in various private assaying concerns as well as being most notably associated with the San Francisco Assay Office. Between 1855 and 1860 the two men had a partnership of the highest reputation. They were nothing if not industrious. In 1855, they issued large numbers of twenty dollar and fifty dollar coins in addition to hundreds of gold ingots. There were 346 ingots recovered from the S.S. Central America, representing the vast majority of the gold found. Weights of these ingots ranged from 5.71 ounces to a massive 933.94 ounces.
This particular ingot has bright yellow-gold coloration with none of the often-seen rust stains from the iron hulk of the ship. The top side is imprinted at the top with the individual ingot number: No 867, followed by the rectangular logo of KELLOGG & HUMBERT ASSAYERS, then: 92.74 OZ / 876 FINE / $1679.38. The individual number is repeated on the top of the back side. Two small assay chips are out of opposing corners, as usual. The surfaces are also clean with a few tiny gas bubbles, again as always seen, and a couple of shallow pinscratches are seen across the top, most likely incurred in the salvage operation.
Accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity and signed by Tommy Thompson.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
