Mining Token from John Kellenberger of Durango, with the Durango smelter on the reverse. 38mm, EF condition. Very rare. Kellenberger was a Swiss-born immigrant who came to America in 1880. He was quite successful in California winemaking, and moved to Durango in the early 1890s. In 1892 he established the Emporium, a wholesale/ retail liquor and cigar business. This continued successfully until Prohibition in 1916, when he turned to soda making. The Durango Smelter was opened in 1881, and was the 9th largest in the state. It operated continuously until 1930, when depression shut it down. It would reopen under secrecy during WWII, and produce some of the uranium ore which went into the bombs that eventually ended the war. -61516
