A beautiful Japanese original woodblock print titled "Snow at Hiye Shrine, Tokyo" 1931, by Kawase Hasui, (1883-1957) Known for his exquisite landscape prints, Kawase Hasui was one of the most prolific and talented shin hanga artists of the early 20th century. He designed around six hundred prints total, mainly for the publisher Watanabe Shozaburo, although he also worked for several others briefly. In 1930, with the help of Watanabe, Hasui exhibited 92 prints in the landmark Toledo Museum of Art exhibition, which introduced his works to the West and led to his international recognition as a Japanese landscape print artist. Later, Hasui was recognized for his ability to depict snow scenes. Great Japanese scholars like the eminent Naruzaki Mureshige liked to describe Kawase Hasui as the "Artist of Snow". He became one of the best known artists of the New Print movement and was named a Living National Treasure in 1956.
Condition is fair, the paper has yellowed, the colors are a bit dull and as seen in the photo on the back of the print, the print was displayed on a piece of cardborad and caused the discoloration, there is also a tare at the bottom corner by the signature and some tape in the same area. The piece is an early print of the artist, not a Posthumous print. Sold as is.
