This is an outstanding authentic original Kathryn Leighton oil on canvas painting of a Blackfeet American Indian Chief. Kathryn Woodman Leighton (1875-1952) was an American artist, based in Los Angeles, California known for her Western portraits of Native American Indians. Kathryn Leighton visited the Canadian Rockies in 1923, Glacier National Park in 1925, to paint landscapes. Later in 1926 she returned to Glacier National Park on commission by the Great Northern Railway to paint scenes of life among the Blackfeet (Blackfoot) in Montana, including portraits of tribal leaders. Her artwork is “historical” in their content with works being increasingly desired and on display at such impressive venues as the Smithsonian American Art Museum and have been sold in the Russell Auction in excess of $30,000. This example shows a very large 44 inch by 36-inch stretch canvas, one of her largest known works / sizes having a prominent Blackfeet Indian cloaked in a beaded wearing Buffalo Chief’s robe with a single Eagle feather in his hair, bone beaded breast color and feather fan. The piece is signed lower right and is in very well-preserved museum quality good condition. The piece is present in the original gilt gold wood frame which also shows good condition and measures 50 inches by 41 1/2 inches. Provenance: From the prominent Ex-art collection of Edward Bazinet, the founder of Department 56, the piece was proudly displayed at his 5-Bar-6 Ranch in Paradise Valley Pray, Montana where a portion of the movie, A River Runs Through It was filmed. Most recently a piece was sold on May 2, 2019 at Leslie Hindman Auction for $23,000 with this work having a richer provenance and appearance.
