Provenance: Private collection, Wales Exhibited: RHA, Dublin, 1930, catalogue no. 165 (£15-15-0) Kathleen Bridle was born in Kent, the daughter of a coastguard officer, and consequently lived in various coastguard stations along the English and Welsh coast. In 1915 she came to Dublin, where she had relatives, and enrolled at the Metropolitan School of Art. She won the prestigious Taylor Scholarship in 1921 and also in that year began exhibiting at the RHA. At the Royal College of Art in London, 1921-5, she accrued further prizes before returning to Dublin, where she spent time in the Clarke family stained glass studio. In 1926 she moved to Fermanagh, where she taught art to a young William Scott RA among others. She remained there for the rest of her life, teaching and painting into her nineties. The present work was painted in Holyhead, Wales, where she had earlier lived for a year with her family. See Snoddy, pages 51-2.
